New on Sports Illustrated: Hammon first woman to coach NBA team; Lakers beat Spurs

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Becky Hammon would have preferred a victory over history after becoming the first woman to coach an NBA team.

The assistant coach took over the San Antonio Spurs in the second quarter after coach Gregg Popovich was ejected in a 121-107 loss to LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night.

''I try not to think of the huge picture and huge aspect of it because it can be overwhelming,'' Hammon said. ''I really have had no time to reflect. I have not had time to look at my phone. So, I don't know what's going on outside the AT&T Center.''

Hammon and the Spurs already had a lot to contend with against the defending league champion Lakers.

James celebrated his 36th birthday with 26 points, eight assists and five rebounds in the Lakers' third double-digit victory. The teams will complete the two-game set Friday night.

''(I was) trying to get the guys in the right spots,'' Hammon said. ''Trying to get them motivated. Obviously, it's a learning situation for all of us, but I would have loved to have walked out there with a win with the guys.''

Popovich was ejected by official Tony Brown with 3:56 remaining in the second quarter. Popovich screamed at Brown and entered the court following a non-call on DeMar DeRozan's attempted layup and a subsequent attempted rebound by Drew Eubanks.

As he exited the court to applause from several of the team's family members in attendance, Popovich pointed a finger at Hammon and had a succinct message.

''You got `em,'' Hammon said. ''See? He doesn't treat us any differently than he does you guys.''

Said LeBron James: ''Obviously she's been paying her dues over the last few years and Coach Pop has given her the opportunity. ... It's a beautiful thing just to hear her barking out calls, barking out sets. She's very passionate about the game. Congrats to her and congrats for our league.''

Hammon took over the team's huddles during timeouts and walked the sideline following Popovich's ejection. Hammon was the first full-time female assistant coach in league history.

''Well deserved,'' Lakers coach Frank Vogel said. ''I've talked to her before and she really knows her stuff and obviously she's here for a reason. She's equipped, intelligent (and the) guys have great respect for her. She's going to be a great coach one day.''

A three-time All-American at Colorado State, Hammon played for the New York Liberty and San Antonio Stars in the WNBA as well as overseas before retiring to join Popovich's staff in 2014.

''Even in timeouts with Pop as head coach, she is quick on her feet,'' DeRozan said. ''She tells us about defensive assignments, offensive sets we should run. Seeing her in the forefront, it would have definitely been cool to have won for her.''

The Lakers contributed to Popovich's frustration and the Spurs' fortunes didn't get much better after the veteran coach exited.

Dennis Schroder had 21 points, Anthony Davis had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Lakers. Wesley Matthews was 6 for 6 on 3-pointers in scoring 18 points off the bench.

The Spurs opened with a 9-2 run, including an uncontested drive through the lane by Keldon Johnson for a two-handed slam. The Lakers responded with an 11-0 run that promoted a timeout by Popovich.

The Lakers took their first double-digit lead at 35-25 on Kyle Kuzma's 3-pointer with 1:14 remaining in the first quarter.

Dejounte Murray had a career-high 29 points, seven assists and seven rebounds.

''At the end of the day, it don't mean nothing, we lost,'' Murray said.

DeRozan added 23 for the Spurs, who lost their second straight after opening the season with two consecutive wins.

TIP-INS

Lakers: PG Alex Caruso missed the game for ''health and safety protocols'' as mandated by the league. Lakers coach Frank Vogel did not elaborate on Caruso's status. . James was listed as questionable after spraining his left ankle sprain in the Lakers' 115-107 loss to Portland on Monday. James played 35 minutes against the Spurs after scoring 29 points in 36 minutes against the Trail Blazers.

Spurs: Popovich said the Spurs will monitor Aldridge's knee soreness on a day-to-day basis. . Tim Duncan took over last season when Popovich was ejected against Portland on Nov. 16, 2019. The Hall of Famer opted not to return as assistant this season.

New on Sports Illustrated: Heat avenge embarrassment, rally to top Bucks 119-108

MIAMI (AP) The Miami Heat engineered a 58-point turnaround against the Milwaukee Bucks in 24 hours.

And just like that, an embarrassing loss was avenged.

Goran Dragic scored 26 points off the bench, Bam Adebayo finished with 22 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds and the Heat beat the Bucks 119-108 on Wednesday night - one day after Milwaukee made an NBA-record 29 3-pointers on the way to a 47-point romp on Miami's home floor.

''They were better than us last night,'' Dragic said. ''Tonight, we had to fight.''

Tyler Herro scored 21 points and grabbed a career-best 15 rebounds for Miami, which trailed by 14 early in the second half and rallied to get a split of the two-game, two-night series against the team that finished with the NBA's best record in each of the past two regular seasons.

''Started to feel like Miami Heat basketball again,'' Herro said.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had a triple-double - 26 points, 13 rebounds, 10 assists - for the Bucks. Donte DiVincenzo scored 15 and Jrue Holiday 13 for Milwaukee, while Khris Middleton was held to eight on 3-for-15 shooting.

''We need to be more consistent. We need to be better,'' Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said. ''But I think there's positives. We've played well for big stretches of games. We've just got to extend those.''

Milwaukee is 2-3 this season; the Bucks started 24-3 last season. Milwaukee missed 25 of its last 34 shots on Wednesday, and Miami - perhaps ironically, given how Tuesday went - outscored the Bucks 15-3 from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter.

''Got to figure ourselves out as a team,'' Antetokounmpo said. ''We're going to be consistent. ... At the end of the day, we're going to play our game, going to find open shots and hope they fall.''

Avery Bradley scored 16 and Kelly Olynyk had 15 for Miami.

Milwaukee's lead was 72-58 early in the second half, 84-73 with 3:44 left in the third. It was all Miami from there, with the Heat - who were without Jimmy Butler for a second straight game because of a sprained right ankle - outscoring the Bucks 40-15 over the next 12 minutes

Herro beat the third-quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer to get Miami within three, Dragic opened the final quarter with another 3 to tie it and the Heat, who trailed by as many as 51 on Tuesday, took the lead for good on a 3 by Olynyk with 9:04 left.

''You want to constantly develop some grit and some toughness during the course of a long season,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. ''And our guys responded in an appropriate fashion.''

TIP-INS

Bucks: Brook Lopez, arguing that Adebayo flopped for a foul in the first half, theatrically fell to the court before Adebayo took the ensuing free throws. ... Pat Connaughton scored 12 and Bobby Portis had 11 for Milwaukee.

Heat: Andre Iguodala got his first start as a member of the Heat, meaning for the 17th consecutive year - 2004 through 2020 - he has started at least one game. ... The Heat gave up 21 points in the first 4:15 Tuesday on the way to a 144-97 loss; they set a tone by giving up four in the first 4:15 on Wednesday.

2020 RECORD

Milwaukee finished the calendar year 33-20 (28-15 regular season, 5-5 playoffs). Miami finished 2020 at 36-29 (22-22 regular season, 14-7 playoffs).

4 FOR 4

The Heat have used four starting lineups in their first four games, a franchise first. The only other teams to use four lineups in four games this season: Cleveland and Minnesota. The Bucks have had the same starters in all five games.

Bucks: Host Chicago on Friday.

Heat: Visit Dallas on Friday.

New on Sports Illustrated: Pacers' TJ Warren Will Have Surgery for Stress Fracture in Left Foot

Warren initially felt soreness in his foot after the Pacers' loss to the Boston Celtics Tuesday.

Indiana Pacers forward TJ Warren will undergo surgery to repair a stress fracture in his left foot,

ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reports

Warren will be out indefinitely, according to Wojnarowski. The forward was ruled out of the Pacers' game on Thursday against the Cleveland Cavaliers due to soreness in his left foot.

Warren initially felt soreness in his foot after the Pacers' loss to the Boston Celtics Tuesday. It was his other foot that hindered him in training camp due to plantar fasciitis.

Warren averaged 15 points in four games this season after a breakout performance in the Orlando restart in the NBA Bubble. He had a similar procedure on his right foot in Phoenix in 2016 before fully recovering.

In the 2019-20, Warren averaged 19.8 points and 4.2 rebounds in 67 games played. Five games into the season, Indiana (4-1) is in second place in the Eastern Conference.

New on Sports Illustrated: Clippers rebound from 51-point debacle to top Wolves 124-101

LOS ANGELES (AP) Lou Williams led seven Clippers in double figures with 20 points and Los Angeles routed the Minnesota Timberwolves 124-101 on Tuesday night in a game missing stars for both teams.

The Clippers bounced back from a 51-point shellacking against Dallas two days earlier despite playing without Kawhi Leonard for the second straight game because of a mouth laceration. Minnesota big man Karl-Anthony Towns sat out with a dislocated left wrist.

''It feels good to get a win after that atrocious loss,'' said Reggie Jackson, who finished with 11 points. ''We knew that wasn't necessarily who we are.''

Paul George added 18 points, Serge Ibaka had 16 points and eight rebounds, and Luke Kennard scored 15 for the Clippers.

D'Angelo Russell led the Timberwolves with 22 points. Malik Beasley added 19 and Ricky Rubio had 17. Jarrett Culver equaled his career high with 10 rebounds.

''We started the game the right way, but when things aren't going our way, everybody plays selfish,'' Rubio said. ''We've got to learn.''

The Timberwolves were coming off a 36-point loss to the Lakers on Sunday.

''We didn't learn nothing from the game against the Lakers,'' Rubio said. ''We came with the same mindset of just, go out there and hoop. That can't continue. We are way worse than 2-2 right now.''

The Clippers led by 20 at halftime and 31 in the third quarter on Williams' three-point play. That's when they made six 3-pointers, including four in a row, with George hitting two of his three in that stretch.

Williams' points came off the bench to go with 12 by Ivica Zubac, helping the Clippers' backups outscore Minnesota's reserves 56-32.

''Zubac was making their team kind of pay for being a smaller team,'' Jackson said. ''He made it easy on us.''

The Wolves were quicker out of the gate, opening a nine-point lead to start the game. The teams were tied once in the second quarter, just before the Clippers' 31-11 run, including 12 in a row, that extended their lead to 70-50 at the break.

''They couldn't stop us after that,'' Zubac said. ''Guys were just more aggressive. Our coaching staff made a point that in the game against Dallas we had the least paint drives. Our focus was to put the ball on the floor and get into the paint.''

All 12 Clippers players scored in the game. They shot 56% from the field and had a season-high 32 assists, equaling their total against Denver on Christmas.

TIP-INS

Timberwolves: Also missing the game were G Jaylen Nowell (left ankle) and G Josh Okogie (left hamstring strain).

Clippers: Los Angeles coach Tyronn Lue said he isn't sure when Leonard will get the eight stitches out of his mouth that were needed after he accidentally got elbowed by Ibaka going for a rebound last Friday at Denver. ... The team is using prerecorded video performances of the national anthem and reruns of rap performances from previous seasons at halftime.

CROATIA EARTHQUAKE

Zubac grew up just east of the Croatian border and is a citizen of the country where a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck southwest of the capital of Zagreb on Tuesday. Buildings were destroyed and at least seven people were killed.

''I feel like I represent the whole country, coming from a small place. People are very proud from Croatia,'' Zubac said. ''It's tough times over there. That city that was hit (Petrinja) the most was ran over during the war and the place was still in bad condition, a lot of old buildings and houses.''

Zubac said he spoke to people he knows in Croatia and they weren't seriously affected by the quake.

New on Sports Illustrated: Bulls win 1st game as Wizards lose 4th straight, 115-107

WASHINGTON (AP) Zach LaVine scored 23 points, including nine straight in the third quarter, and Coby White added 18 to lead the Chicago Bulls to their first victory of the season, 115-107 over the winless Washington Wizards on Tuesday night.

Chicago improved to 1-4 while Washington fell to 0-4, its worst start since beginning the 2012-13 season with 12 straight losses.

Russell Westbrook, who sat out Sunday's game, had his third straight triple-double with 21 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists for Washington.

Bradley Beal scored 29 points and Davis Bertans added 20 for the Wizards, who shot just 10 for 37 (27%) from 3-point range. They missed 10 of 11 in the second quarter, when Chicago took the lead.

''The only way we can get out of this as a team is if we stick together,'' Bertans said. ''Being negative about the four losses isn't going to help us come back and win games.''

Chicago players presented a game ball to coach Billy Donovan, who earned his first victory with the Bulls. He coached Oklahoma City for the previous five seasons.

''I thought it was important that we showed those two guys a crowd,'' Donovan said about Beal and Westbrook. ''Especially Russell in transition, if he sees creases and seams he takes advantage of it.''

The Bulls had seven players in double figures. Otto Porter scored 16 points, Garrett Temple and Patrick Williams had 12 apiece, and Tomas Satoransky and Wendell Carter each added 10.

FAMILIAR FACES

Donovan coached Beal at Florida and Westbrook with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Donovan said Beal was a pre-med major during his one year in college, and wavered before deciding to leave school after a single season.

''He obviously made the right decision,'' Donovan said.

In his four years coaching Westbrook, Donovan said he was never disappointed.

''When you have your best player when you walk in there as a coach, and you're never worried about whether this guy is going to show up and compete, it's an incredible luxury,'' Donovan explained.

Washington coach Scott Brooks preceded Donovan as coach of the Thunder, and said Westbrook is teaching important lessons with the Wizards.

''We haven't won a game,'' Brooks said. ''But he's teaching these young players how important our job is and that's priceless.''

TIP-INS

Bulls: F Thaddeus Young, who missed the first three games of the season with an infection of his lower left leg, said after Tuesday's shootaround he was ready to play. But he sat out again. ... The Bulls avoided their first 0-4 start since 2007-08. . F Lauri Makkenen reinjured his left calf and played just 19 minutes. ''I wanted to be available and be there for my teammates, but it's frustrating,'' he said.

Wizards: Exercised the fourth-year option on G/F Troy Brown Jr. and the third-year option on F Rui Hachimura. . Brooks said Hachimura, yet to play this season due to an eye injury, is nearing a return. He played 3-on-3 on Tuesday and could play 5-on-5 on Wednesday. . G Garrison Mathews, a two-way player, was active for the first time this season.

New on Sports Illustrated: Sanders, Oklahoma State beat Miami 37-34 in Cheez-It Bowl

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) Oklahoma State went to the air early and often to finish its season on a high note.

Spencer Sanders threw for 305 yards and four touchdowns, and the Cowboys held off No. 18 Miami for a 37-34 victory in the Cheez-It Bowl on Tuesday.

Oklahoma State (8-3) called 15 consecutive pass plays to open the game and stormed out to a 21-0 lead. Sanders threw TD passes of 30 and 32 yards to Brennan Presley, and LD Brown had a 2-yard touchdown run.

''Our game plan going in was to try to offset some of the speed and strength they have in the front six,'' Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. ''They are a fast, athletic team. We wanted to throw the ball 25 times in the first half.''

Sanders also led the Cowboys with 45 yards rushing and was named Most Valuable Player.

''That MVP doesn't just go to me,'' Sanders said. ''The defense stopped them when they needed to stop them. We scored when we needed to score. I told them that this MVP is for everyone.''

Presley caught a third touchdown pass in the fourth quarter to put Oklahoma State up 37-26. He finished with six receptions for 118 yards. Tay Martin had six catches for 73 yards, and Dillon Stoner also caught a touchdown pass.

''We have a bunch of weapons,'' Sanders said. ''We have guys you haven't even seen yet and guys that didn't get many touches. Putting Brennan with that group makes it that much better.''

Miami (8-3) got on the board in the second quarter when D'Eriq King threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Brevin Jordan. But King left with a right knee injury with 4:06 remaining in the first half. Hurricanes coach Manny Diaz said he will be evaluated Wednesday.

King, who transferred to Miami from Houston before the season, announced last week that he would be returning to Miami and for a sixth season of college football.

''It's harsh ... a year that's had so much adversity, for a guy that's done everything right,'' Diaz said. ''Hopefully we'll get good news tomorrow.''

The Hurricanes rallied behind backup quarterback N'Kosi Perry, who threw for 228 yards and two touchdowns. Cam'Ron Harris' 42-yard touchdown run made it 21-19 in the third quarter, but Jordan came up short on the 2-point conversion.

''The guys rallied around N'Kosi and did a great job,'' Diaz said. ''He looked like a guy that played a lot of ball and the team had confidence that they could move the ball with him.''

Perry's 5-yard TD pass to Michael Harley helped the Hurricanes close to 37-34 with 5:39 left. But he misfired on six of his final nine passes, and his 6-yard pass to Michael Redding III was not enough to convert a fourth-and-9 with under two minutes remaining.

PLAYING IT SAFE

Oklahoma State wide receiver Tylan Wallace had six catches for 45 yards in just one half of action. That was the tentative plan, according to Gundy.

''We just talked with him and at some point we wanted to get some players in the game that were going to be here next year and we wanted to protect him,'' Gundy said. ''I'm not going to say that what happened with Miami's quarterback didn't have a little bit of effect on that.''

POLL IMPLICATIONS

Oklahoma State was unranked coming into the game, but likely will make the final Top 25 of the season.

Miami, ranked No. 18, could be out of the final rankings after consecutive losses.

STREAKS AND STATS

Oklahoma State has won four of its past five bowl games. ... Miami has lost five consecutive bowl games and 11 of its past 12. ... Jordan had eight catches for 96 yards and two touchdowns. ... Miami defensive back Te'Cory Couch had 9 1/2 tackles, but was flagged for pass interference three times in the third quarter.

UP NEXT

Oklahoma State should have a dynamic offense with Spencer returning at quarterback when it opens next season against Missouri State.

Miami has to hope King's injury isn't serious enough to keep him out of spring practice because the Hurricanes open next season against Alabama in Atlanta.

New on Sports Illustrated: Texas overcomes Ehlinger injury, routs Colorado 55-23

SAN ANTONIO (AP) Texas has been tested all year, but losing senior quarterback Sam Ehlinger to a shoulder injury was an obstacle the Longhorns never anticipated.

The same spirit that pushed the team through this entire chaotic season helped the Longhorns thrive without him.

Sophomore signal-caller Casey Thompson came off the bench and passed for 170 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 20 Texas overcame Ehlinger's injury to beat Colorado 55-23 in the Valero Alamo Bowl on Tuesday night.

Freshman running back Bijan Robinson had 183 yards on 10 carries with a TD for Texas (7-3). He was selected the bowl's offensive MVP.

''We had a lot of young guys that stepped up in this game,'' Robinson said.

The Longhorns are undefeated in four bowl games under Tom Herman, unbeaten as a head coach in five bowls overall.

''This is the culmination of a lot of hard work by some really dedicated young men that 10 months ago made a decision that they were going to go to work every day and do whatever it took to get through this season together,'' Herman said. ''And they did. We had our ups and downs, but they never wavered. They never gave up hope. They never gave up confidence. They kept playing for each other. I couldn't be prouder of my team.''

More adversity developed against the Buffaloes (4-2).

Ehlinger missed the second half after sustaining a shoulder injury in the second quarter. Herman said he was uncertain when the injury occurred, but Ehlinger returned to the field in the third quarter in warmups, with his right arm in a sling. There was no immediate word on the extent of his injury.

''I hated that he couldn't finish the game, but we wouldn't be here without him,'' Herman said. ''He was the leader behind this senior class. I don't know what the future holds for him, but I know that I'm thankful for him being on our team, being on my team each and every day. What he means to us is indescribable.''

The NCAA is offering athletes an extra year of eligibility given the unusual circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unknown if Ehlinger will return.

He played the entire first half Tuesday, completing 10 of 16 passes for 160 yards and a score.

Colorado was playing its sixth game of the season due to the coronavirus. The Pac-12 initially canceled its season only to reverse the decision and delay the start until Nov. 7.

The Buffaloes had two games canceled due to virus issues, but competed in the Alamo Bowl despite failing to reach the traditional six-win threshold required for the postseason.

The Longhorns appeared more polished throughout, striking quickly to open both halves.

Fueled by a 39-yard pass from Ehlinger to Joshua Moore, Texas drove 74 yards on four plays in 50 seconds on its opening possession. Robinson dove in for an 8-yard TD run with 12:51 left in the opening quarter.

Robinson scored again two possessions later, catching a 14-yard pass from Ehlinger with 5:28 remaining in the first.

The Longhorns didn't take a step back without Ehlinger.

Thompson started the second half in place of Ehlinger and led Texas to a touchdown on its opening possession. Thompson completed a 13-yard scoring pass to Moore just 37 seconds into the third for a 24-10 advantage.

Thompson added a 25-yard touchdown pass to Moore, a 23-yarder to Robinson and a 73-yarder to Kelvontay Dixon. The backup was 8 of 10 on the night.

''I'm really proud of the young guys,'' Herman said. ''I'm really, really excited about the future. What these last two games playing so many young guys has shown is the trajectory of our program and what we're capable of with these young guys.''

Cameron Dicker set an Alamo Bowl record with a 53-yard field goal late in the first half that extended the Longhorns' lead to 17-7.

Colorado's only sustained drive of the first quarter ended in an interception when Sam Noyer threw into a group of four defenders. Texas linebacker DeMarvion Overshown made his second interception of the season, picking off Noyer at the Buffaloes 11-yard line. Overshown had six tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery

Jarek Broussard rushed for 82 yards and two touchdowns on 27 carries for Colorado.

TAKEAWAY

Colorado: Despite the lopsided loss, coach Karl Dorrell's tenure with the Buffaloes is off to a good start. Colorado went 3-1 in the Pac-12 under Dorrell, who signed a five-year contract in the offseason.

Texas: The Longhorns found a capable replacement for Ehlinger in Thompson. The 6-foot-1 sophomore displayed his elusiveness, escaping a heavy rush early in the third quarter for a 22-yard run. He also demonstrated his arm strength by throwing over the defense for a 73-yard touchdown to Dixon in the fourth.

New on Sports Illustrated: Streaking TCU meets 3-7 Arkansas in Texas Bowl

Arkansas brings an unsightly 3-7 record and a four-game losing skid into the Texas Bowl to face TCU on New Year's Eve in Houston.

Razorbacks coach Sam Pittman isn't making any apologies.

"We'll always have folks who will say we were 3-7 and things of that nature. If you look at our schedule and look - obviously we played 10 SEC games, certainly played four I think of the top nine teams in the country," said Pittman, whose three wins were against Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Tennessee.

Teams did not need a winning record or a minimum number of victories this season to be eligible for a bowl due to the uncertainty of COVID-19.

The Horned Frogs (6-4), winners of three straight and five of their last six games, last faced the Razorbacks when they split a home-and-home series from 2016-17. TCU's winning streak includes a 29-22 victory over then-No. 15 Oklahoma State on Dec. 5.

The Texas Bowl will mark the Frogs' ninth game out of 11 played in Texas this season.

"Most of our kids are very excited, even the Louisiana kids because this is going to be an opportunity for their families to come watch them play," TCU coach Gary Patterson said. "If it would have been somewhere out of state, going west or really further east, it would have been harder for them to do that."

Former Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks is a big reason why Arkansas won its three games this season and lost three others -- to Auburn, LSU and Missouri - by a combined seven points.

Franks has revived his career at Arkansas after suffering a gruesome ankle injury with the Gators in the third game of last season.

"A game here and there, we were in every game and we were competing and we did a good job with that," said Franks, who was the 2018 Peach Bowl MVP with Florida. "I think the program is turned around and definitely headed in the right direction with Coach Pittman and all of the staff and everybody did a great job of getting the program going in the right direction."

He has thrown for 2,107 yards at a 68.5 percent completion rate with 17 touchdowns and only four interceptions.

While other NFL prospects are opting out of bowls, Franks said he will play in the Texas Bowl.

"I feel like it's just my duty," he said. "Not necessarily my duty, but for me, I want to stay and I want to finish the season out. I want to finish what I started."

TCU's running game dictates its performances.

It leads the Big 12 at 216.0 rushing yards per game. The Horned Frogs are 6-0 when running for at least 200 yards. They have averaged 275.0 yards per game rushing in their six wins and 124.3 in the four losses.

Quarterback Max Duggan leads TCU in rushing with 526 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has completed 146 of 240 passes for 1,795 yards with 10 touchdowns and four interceptions.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 15 Iowa faces Missouri, seeks fourth straight bowl win

The No. 15 Iowa Hawkeyes will seek their fourth consecutive bowl victory when they face the Missouri Tigers in the Music City Bowl on Wednesday, Dec. 30 in Nashville.

The Hawkeyes (6-2) should carry momentum into this game after winning the last six games of their Big Ten season.

"The camaraderie's been great," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "The support of each other has been great. I think all of us feel extremely fortunate we've been able to get eight games. We're not taking one day for granted moving forward."

The depleted Tigers (5-5) closed their Southeastern Conference season with lopsided losses to Georgia (49-14) at home and Mississippi State (51-32) on the road.

"We want to continue to fight and earn respect. We want to continue to put a good product on the field," Missouri coach Eliah Drinkwitz said. "We're going to have some adversity in this game, but it's an opportunity for us to compete."

Offensive tackle Larry Borom and middle linebacker Nick Bolton have opted out of the game for the Tigers to prepare for the NFL Draft. Those are just the latest setbacks for Missouri in a season marked by injuries, COVID-19 casualties, and opt-outs.

Missouri has been especially hard hit by losses in the trenches, which makes them vulnerable against the Hawkeyes.

"One of the Big Ten coaches that I know that I've tried to get a hold of said it was the best defensive front they played all year," Drinkwitz said. "I know that they're very fundamentally sound. Coach Ferentz is going to be committed to running the football, stopping the run and playing good defense, solid special teams."

Missouri allowed 148 points in their past three games while the Hawkeyes have allowed just 128 points all year.

Iowa held Wisconsin to 56 yards rushing and 225 total yards during their 28-7 victory over Wisconsin. Conversely, the Tigers defense allowed 1,061 yards in their last two losses.

The Tigers are led offensively by running back Larry Rountree III (972 yards, 14 touchdowns rushing) and quarterback Connor Bazelak (2,366 yards, seven touchdowns passing).

Tyler Goodson has rushed for 762 yards and seven touchdowns for Iowa, including an 80-yard run against the Badgers. Quarterback Spencer Petras has passed for 1,569 yards and nine touchdowns - including five in his last two games.

Iowa's season finale against Michigan was canceled, so the Hawkeyes haven't played since Dec. 12. Ferentz contracted the coronavirus during the interim, but he expects to coach in the game and he is hoping the Hawkeyes do not have any pandemic casualties or opt-outs for the game.

"We'll look forward to getting back at it and have a chance to play one more time," Ferentz said. "The biggest thing is for us to be together enjoying each other's company. We've enjoyed each and every chance to go out and compete."

While the Hawkeyes were hoping to get a better bowl assignment, they welcome the chance to get some fans to Nashville. Nissan Stadium will allow limited attendance, something Iowa did not see in conference play.

"It's going to be great for our players, because they'll actually play in front of fans," Ferentz said. "We haven't done that in almost a year."

The Hawkeyes have played in empty stadiums since their victory over USC in last year's Holiday Bowl. They won the Outback Bowl over Mississippi State in 2018 and the Pinstripe Bowl against Boston College in 2017.

The Tigers lost in the Liberty Bowl (against Oklahoma State) in 2018 and the Texas Bowl (against Texas) in 2017. Their last bowl victory came in the 2014 Citrus Bowl against Minnesota.

New on Sports Illustrated: Fulham-Tottenham Hotspur Preview

Jose Mourinho will be aiming for Tottenham to show more "ambition and desire" after saying his team lacked such attributes in their 1-1 draw with Wolves.

Tanguy Ndombele's first-minute strike looked set to be sending Spurs into third place on Sunday, yet Romain Saiss headed in a late equaliser for Nuno Espirito Santo's side.

Spurs mustered just three attempts on target in total, the last of which came in the 21st minute, and Mourinho was left frustrated by his side's display.

"I am (frustrated). One point against Wolves normally wouldn't be a bad result but they are a strong opponent, but scoring a goal in the first minute and having control of the game for the rest of it, and having 89 minutes to score more goals, it feels frustrating," he told Sky Sports.

"I give some credit to Wolves because though they were losing they put pressure on us - pressure that we coped with, controlled the game very well - but we didn't have that ambition, that desire to go for more."

After a run of games against top-half opposition Tottenham host Fulham on Wednesday, before taking on Leeds United three days later.

"Every game is an opportunity but every game is dangerous," Mourinho said. "Fulham are in a fantastic run of results, they are playing very well, so it is going to be difficult.

"I don't consider that Fulham or Leeds United will be easier matches."

Fulham held Southampton on Boxing Day, making it four successive draws, and Ola Aina believes Scott Parker's side are showing promising signs of improvement.

"We all know how it was at the beginning of the season, so from that point to now, it just shows the hard work that we're putting in, as well as the togetherness that we have," Aina told fulhamfc.com.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Tottenham - Tanguy Ndombele

As well as scoring a superb early goal, Ndombele put in a strong individual display against Wolves, and Spurs suffered when the former Lyon midfielder was taken off midway through the second half.

Fulham - Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa

Having spent last season on loan at Villarreal, Zambo Anguissa has impressed for Fulham in midfield this season. His power and ability to hold onto possession could be extremely useful up against Spurs.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Tottenham have won 10 of their last 11 Premier League games against Fulham, losing the other 0-1 at White Hart Lane in March 2013.

- Fulham have lost their last 13 Premier League London derbies, an all-time record in the top-flight. The Cottagers also have the lowest win rate in such fixtures in the Premier League (19 per cent - won 25/131).

- Tottenham have lost their final league game in just one of the last 11 calendar years (W7 D3), with that defeat coming at home against Wolves in 2018 (1-3).

- Spurs lost their last home league game 0-2 against Leicester - they have not lost consecutive home league games since January 2019, while Mourinho has never lost back-to-back home league games in his entire managerial career.

- Harry Kane is the second highest goalscorer in London derbies in Premier League history (35), with only Thierry Henry netting more (43).

New on Sports Illustrated: Liverpool-Newcastle United Preview

Liverpool's players were left angry after their 1-1 draw with West Brom, but Jurgen Klopp says his side understand they must work hard to win games.

Semi Ajayi's header snatched a point for the struggling Baggies at Anfield on Sunday, as Sam Allardyce's fine record at the home of the champions continued.

Klopp's focus will now switch to Wednesday's contest with Newcastle United, and the German insisted his team are fully appreciative of the shortcomings which cost them against West Brom.

"I am not the first day in the job," Klopp told reporters. "We should have won the game, or we wanted to win the game and we didn't, and now we are all depressed or whatever. The boys are more angry than anything else because they know that it was not perfect.

"But that's it and now, of course, we have to play the next game in three days. We don't live in dreamland and just win football matches because we want to win them. We have to work for it and we have to play for it and we have to finish the situations off.

"We have to be disciplined as well, in a different way. That's what we have to do and we could have done that better."

Newcastle lost to Manchester City on Boxing Day, following on from an EFL Cup defeat to Brentford, though Steve Bruce believes there is unjustified hysteria surrounding his side's displays.

"My remit is to make sure we stay and remain a Premier League outfit," said Bruce. "That is what I will try to achieve. That is where we have been for the last three or four years.

"Of course, for Newcastle, in a lot of people's eyes, that isn't going to be enough but that is where we are at the moment."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Newcastle United - Andy Carroll

Carroll was something of a flop at Liverpool, following his big-money move from Newcastle in 2011. Back at his hometown club, the experienced forward will be aiming to do the damage against his former side, who are likely to be without the injured Joel Matip, whether from the start or from the bench.

Liverpool - Mohamed Salah

Salah has been involved in nine goals in his last six away Premier League games (seven goals, two assists), already netting three more goals on the road this season than he did in the whole of last term (four). The Egyptian has also scored in each of his last four starts against Newcastle.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Newcastle are winless in seven Premier League games against Liverpool (D2 L5), losing each of the last five in a row. They have never lost six consecutive top-flight games against the Reds.

- Liverpool have won their final league game in each of the last six calendar years, since losing 1-2 against Chelsea in 2013.

- Liverpool earned their biggest ever top-flight away win in their last game on the road, beating Crystal Palace 7-0. They scored as many goals in that victory as they had in their previous five away league games and became the first side in Premier League history to have seven different players assist a goal in a match.

- Liverpool have conceded 20 Premier League goals in 15 matches this season - they did not concede their 20th goal until the 28th match in their title-winning 2019-20 campaign.

- Sadio Mane has scored four away Premier League goals this season, only netting more in one previous campaign (seven last season). Mane has been directly involved in seven goals in his last eight away top-flight matches (six goals, one assist).

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Padres to Trade for 2020 NL Cy Young Runner-up Yu Darvish

The acquisition of Darvish helps make San Diego's rotation one of the best in MLB.

The Padres agreed to a deal with the Cubs to acquire 2020 NL Cy Young runner-up Yu Darvish, according to ESPN's

Jeff Passan.

Darvish will head to San Diego along with catcher Victor Caratini, per Passan. The Cubs will reportedly receive starting pitcher Zach Davies as well as four minor league prospects.

Darvish, 34, is due $59 million over the next three years and is entering his ninth MLB season after a successful stint in Japan. He has a 3.47 ERA in 182 starts while pitching with the Rangers, Dodgers and Cubs.

Last season, Darvish recorded a 2.01 ERA in 12 starts with Chicago.

The Padres' addition of Darvish marks their second big move in recent days as on Sunday night reports surfaced of the team's acquisition of former AL Cy Young award winner Blake Snell from the Tampa Bay Rays.

In the short-term, the two deals will help offset the loss of right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger, who will miss the entire 2021 season with Tommy John surgery.

The Padres rotation would seemingly also included Dinelson Lamet, who finished fourth in 2020 in the NL Cy Young voting as well as Chris Paddack, among other notable names.

San Diego finished the 2020 season 37-23 and second in the NL West. The franchise made just its first postseason appearance since 2006 and third since 1999.

The Cubs finished last year 34-26 and in first-place in the NL Central. Chicago has made the playoffs in five of the last six seasons.

New on Sports Illustrated: Ja Morant Exits Grizzlies vs. Nets With Left Ankle Injury

Morant injured his left ankle in the second quarter against the Nets on Monday night.

Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant exited Memphis' matchup with the Nets on Monday with a left ankle sprain.

Morant landed on the foot of Nets guard Tyler Johnson in the second quarter on Monday as he contested a jump shot. Memphis' second-year guard was taken off the floor in a wheelchair after initially trying to put weight on his ankle.

Morant got off to a blistering start to 2020-21 after winning Rookie of the Year last season. He scored 44 points in an opening-night loss to the Spurs, adding 28 points and seven assists against the Hawks on Dec. 26. Memphis selected Morant with the No. 2 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.

Memphis enters 2020-21 seeking its first playoff appearance since 2017. The Grizzlies logged seven straight postseason berths from 2011-17, though the franchise has never reached the NBA Finals

New on Sports Illustrated: Sheffield United-Burnley Preview

Chris Wilder has no doubt over Sheffield United's motivation, but insists his team are lacking quality in vital moments.

United's torrid form continued as they slumped to a home defeat to Everton last time out - Gylfi Sigurdsson striking late on to down the Premier League's bottom club.

Without a win from 15 games this term, a failure to take all three points against Burnley on Tuesday would see the Blades equal Queens Park Rangers' Premier League record of longest winless run from the start of a campaign.

Wilder, however, does not believe it is down to a lack of motivation.

"The story of our season is not showing the quality that we showed last year to get the results and the position that we did," he told BT Sport.

"I'll pack it in if I need to motivate the players. It's not a case of motivation. It's just the quality - I can't all of a sudden put that quality into them. I'd love to go and play for them. These are players that want to play in the Premier League and I'm not chucking them under the bus but they have to show the quality in the crucial times."

Burnley, meanwhile, saw a four-game unbeaten run come to an end as they lost to Leeds United on Sunday, though Sean Dyche was left furious after Ashley Barnes had a goal disallowed.

Ben Mee was adjudged to have fouled Illan Meslier, though replays suggested the Leeds goalkeeper seemed to have made more of an infringement.

"The 'keeper comes out, knees him in the back, drops the ball and somehow that's a foul on him," Dyche told Sky Sports.

"That can't be in the game. You can't run, jump and knee someone in the back. So I'm incredibly frustrated, and lots of other decisions have gone against us."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Burnley - Nick Pope

The Blades have struggled for goals all season and are coming up against a fine shot-stopper in the form of Pope, who has conceded just three goals in his last five appearances - although he did give away what proved to be the winning penalty against Leeds.

Sheffield United - Aaron Ramsdale

With goals in such short supply, United have to start keeping clean sheets, and they need Ramsdale to step up. The Blades are the only side without a clean sheet in the Premier League so far this season, having conceded in each of their last 18 league games in total.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- This is just the third Premier League meeting between Burnley and Sheffield United, with the Clarets winless in both meetings last season (D1 L1).

- Burnley have lost their last league game in just one of the last seven calendar years (W3 D3), though this defeat did come in their final game of 2019 (0-2 vs Manchester United).

- The Blades are winless in their last 13 Premier League away games (D3 L10), with their draw at Brighton and Hove Albion last time out ending a run of eight straight defeats on the road.

- Both Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes found the net in Burnley's home win against Wolves - the pair have each scored 20 Premier League goals at Turf Moor, more than any other player at the ground.

- When playing their final league game of a calendar year away from home, Sheffield United have not won since 1977 (3-2 vs Hull), losing each of their last 11 such games since then.

New on Sports Illustrated: West Ham United-Southampton Preview

West Ham boss David Moyes believes his team's resilience to twice come from behind against Brighton and Hove Albion puts them in good stead heading into Tuesday's clash with Southampton.

The Hammers drew 2-2 at home to Brighton on Sunday, despite the Seagulls dominating much of the proceedings, though West Ham ultimately managed the same number of attempts on target as the visitors.

Southampton, meanwhile, were held to a goalless draw by Fulham in their Boxing Day outing, and Moyes is aiming to take the bright points from the Brighton game into Tuesday's fixtures.

"The positives I take from it were that we were resilient, we kept at it and we eventually found a way of getting something out of it, but it wasn't anything close to how I wanted it to look like or how I think we can play," Moyes told West Ham TV.

"I thought we were really disappointing in a lot of aspects today, but we're in a little period just now when the injuries that we've had are just starting to catch up on us and we're muddling through in certain areas."

On the other hand, Ralph Hasenhuttl knows his team will need to fight through the fatigue, though the Saints will have an extra day of rest compared to West Ham, who the former RB Leipzig coach is yet to beat.

"We have never won against them so far and never taken points, so we have to do it better than we have in the past," he said.

"We have to be concentrated for this tough game, find the right players to choose and hopefully we can cause them some issues.

"To the Liverpool game we have a little bit longer to recover, but this game comes quickly."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Southampton - Danny Ings

Saints talisman Ings missed out against Fulham due to a hamstring injury and his absence was felt. Should he be fit to return, he will be aiming to end a three-match run without a goal.

West Ham - Tomas Soucek

Soucek, who netted the second equaliser against Brighton, has scored more Premier League goals via corner situations than any other player (five). Indeed, it is two more than opponents Southampton have scored in that time (three).

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Southampton have lost their last two Premier League home games against West Ham, as many as they had in their previous 15 against them at St Mary's or The Dell (W7 D6 L2).

- West Ham have won their final league game in just one of the last 11 calendar years (D3 L7), though that victory did come against Southampton in the Premier League in 2015 (2-1).

- Southampton have kept seven clean sheets in their 16 Premier League home games in 2020, last keeping more in a single calendar year at St Mary's in 2015 (8).

- Against no side has Southampton's Theo Walcott scored more Premier League goals than he has vs West Ham (6). However, he's not scored in any of his last five against the Hammers, with five of his six goals against them coming between 2011 and 2013.

- After scoring in 12 consecutive Premier League games, Southampton now failed to score in their last two in the competition. They last went three league games without a goal in September-October 2018 under Mark Hughes (five games).

New on Sports Illustrated: Arsenal-Brighton & Hove Albion Preview

Mikel Arteta conceded he has been left feeling drained after Arsenal's dismal run in the Premier League, though things now look brighter after a win over Chelsea.

Arsenal saw off their London rivals 3-1 at Emirates Stadium on Boxing Day, ending a seven-game winless streak in the league.

The Gunners sit 15th, one place and four points above Brighton and Hove Albion, who they face on Tuesday.

"It is draining, it is frustrating and it is painful," said Arteta, as reported by BBC Sport. "Obviously results-wise in the last few weeks we have all been suffering, I have been suffering. I feel very responsible for that.

"The worst feeling is because I want to do so well for this football club and at the moment we are in, I want to bring all my passion, the knowledge that I have, the right intentions to move as quickly as we possibly can as a football club.

"In order to do that we need to win football matches, to be stable and win. When I don't, I feel like I am letting the club down and the people that work for us, and obviously our fans."

Brighton put in a dominant display against West Ham on Sunday, yet it did not prove enough to claim a much-needed win, with the Hammers twice hitting back to secure a 2-2 draw.

"Frustrated, is the emotion at the moment, because we felt we did enough to get three points," Graham Potter, whose side have won just one game in 14 matches, told BBC Sport.

"We've had a lot of draws. That's where our work is. It sounds simple, but the work is on the training ground, to turn those little margins our way. Keep fighting, keep sticking together."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Brighton and Hove Albion - Neal Maupay

Maupay made his 50th Premier League appearance against West Ham, scoring his 15th goal in that game. Only five French players have scored more in their first 50 appearances in the competition, while it was the most since Alexandre Lacazette scored 20 for Arsenal in his first 50 between August 2017 and December 2018.

Arsenal - Bukayo Saka

Saka scored Arsenal's third goal against Chelsea, audaciously lobbing Edouard Mendy, and the youngster was adamant it was indeed a shot, rather than a cross. The versatile winger has been a bright spark in what has so far been a poor season for the Gunners.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Brighton won home and away league games against Arsenal last season - they have never won three in a row against the Gunners in league competition before.

- The Seagulls have won just one of their 16 home Premier League games in 2020, though that victory did come against Arsenal back in June. No team in Premier League history has won as few as one home game across an entire calendar year (excluding teams that were promoted/relegated).

- Since beating Fulham 3-0 away on the opening day this season, Arsenal have netted just three goals across their last six league games on the road.

- Arsenal have kept six clean sheets in their 17 Premier League away games under Mikel Arteta - their previous six away shutouts came across a run of 44 games. However, the Gunners have not won any of their 11 away league games under Arteta in which they have conceded (D3 L8).

- Lacazette is Arsenal's top scorer in all competitions this season, with six goals. All four of his goals in the Premier League this season have been the opening goal of the game, accounting for 67 per cent of the times the Gunners have scored first in the competition this term.

New on Sports Illustrated: Wolverhampton-Manchester United Preview

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thinks Edinson Cavani could forge a longer-term career at Manchester United, saying the striker has "a few years left" at the highest level.

Cavani arrived on the October 5 deadline day at the end of the previous transfer window, and the 33-year-old has made a telling impact.

He scored twice and set up another to help United come from 2-0 down to beat Southampton 3-2 last month after netting his first goal in a win over Everton, and he also broke the deadlock in the 2-0 EFL Cup win at Goodison Park last week.

"At the moment, it looks like he's got a few years left in him," said Solskjaer, whose side face Wolves on Tuesday. "I wouldn't say anything else. He's made a great impact, so let's just focus on improving everyone.

"But he's got a few years left in him. I trust him, I trust my players, and we've got good competition for places. He'll probably start more games than he won't start.

"He's so meticulous, professional, his habits, everything about it shows why he's had the career he's had. Even at the age he is now, he's one of the fittest players we've got."

At the other end of the spectrum, Wolves are relying on youngsters Fabio Silva and Pedro Neto to lead their line in Raul Jimenez's absence.

"We have a squad of young players that we trust," Nuno Espirito Santo told Sky Sports after a 1-1 draw with Spurs.

"It's up to us to choose the right moments. Probably if things hadn't gone the way they did with injuries we wouldn't see so many of these players playing together right now, but we want to see them grow, see them improve."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Manchester United - Marcus Rashford

Rashford opened the scoring in United's 2-2 draw with Leicester City on Boxing Day. His cool finish took him onto 50 Premier League goals for the Red Devils - he is the third-youngest player to reach that total for the club, behind Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Wolves - Pedro Neto

Neto, with four goals and three assists, has been directly involved in more goals in 15 Premier League games this season (seven) than in 29 last term (six).

KEY OPTA FACTS

- United have not lost any of their last nine home league games against Wolves (W6 D3), keeping six clean sheets in that run since a 0-1 loss in February 1980.

- Since returning to the Premier League in 2018, Wolves are unbeaten in all four of their league meetings with Manchester United (W1 D3), despite conceding the first goal in three of these matches.

- After a six game winless home run in the league, United have won two of their last three at Old Trafford (D1). The Red Devils scored as many goals in their 6-2 victory over Leeds as they had in their previous eight home league games combined.

- United have conceded at least twice in each of their last three Premier League games, only shipping 2-plus goals in more consecutively in the competition back in August 2001 (four). However, the Red Devils have avoided defeat in all three games (W2 D1), with West Ham the last side to have a longer unbeaten Premier League run while conceding two or more goals (five games in March/April 2016).

- Bruno Fernandes has both scored and assisted in 29 per cent of his Premier League appearances (eight out of 28) - the highest ratio of any player in the competition's history.

- Cavani has scored three goals and assisted twice in the Premier League, all as a substitute. He is one of only six players to see their first five Premier League goal involvements come as a sub, while only three players have had their first six goals or assists as a sub: Lomana Lua Lua, Theo Walcott and Erik Nevland.

New on Sports Illustrated: Leeds United-West Brom Preview

Sam Allardyce believes West Brom's display in their smash-and-grab draw at Anfield showed him that his team have the desire to avoid Premier League relegation.

Against the odds, the Baggies snatched a 1-1 draw against the champions thanks to Semi Ajayi's late header on Sunday.

They have little time for rest, with a home clash against fellow promoted side Leeds United coming up on Tuesday.

"Really good organisation, a team trying their very best to nullify the best team in this league at their own patch, and what a fantastic job they did," Allardyce told Sky Sports after the draw at Anfield.

"We're not the most constructive in terms of the amount of goals we score, that's obvious to see, so goals are precious to us.

"The lads have showed a lot of grit, determination, organisation and team spirit at a difficult place. I've seen the players telling me that they really want to stay in this division."

Leeds, meanwhile, bounced back from their 6-2 thrashing at Old Trafford with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Burnley - Patrick Bamford's early penalty proving enough.

"We've had our ups and downs," Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa said after Sunday's win, in which his team had less possession than the Clarets.

"Our objective is to be able to compete on an even keel with all our opponents in the Premier League, but it is not an easy task.

"For example, if you look at what happened at the end of the second half. We had to adapt to a situation we hadn't faced up until now and the result was in danger. So every game in the Premier League is a big challenge."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

West Brom - Karlan Grant

It would be expected that West Brom will play mostly on the counter yet again, meaning the onus will be on Grant - who missed a great chance against Liverpool - to convert those opportunities.

Leeds United - Pascal Struijk

Recalled into a makeshift three-man defence, youngster Struijk performed admirably against Burnley's attack on Sunday, and will be hoping to have a run in the team with the likes of Diego Llorente, Liam Cooper and Robin Koch struggling with injury.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- West Brom have lost just one of their last six home league games against Leeds (W4 D1), with that defeat coming in their only previous Premier League game against them at the Hawthorns in August 2002 (1-3).

- Leeds have only won their final league game in one of the last 10 calendar years (D3 L6), though that victory did come in their last game of 2019, a 5-4 thriller at Birmingham City.

- West Brom have conceded eight goals in their last two home Premier League games, losing 1-5 against Crystal Palace and 0-3 against Aston Villa. They last conceded three or more goals in three consecutive home Premier League games in April 2014.

- Allardyce has won just one of his four home games against Leeds in all competitions (D1 L2), with this his first meeting with the Whites since a 2-2 draw in charge of West Ham in August 2011.

- Leeds forward Bamford has scored 10 goals in 15 Premier League games for the Whites this season, the most by a player for a newly promoted club at this stage of a season since Kevin Phillips had scored 13 in 15 games for Sunderland in 1999-2000.

New on Sports Illustrated: Jared Goff Undergoes Thumb Surgery, Eyes Playoff Return

Goff is unlikely to play against the Cardinals in Week 17.

Rams quarterback Jared Goff underwent surgery on his broken thumb on Monday, according to ESPN's

Adam Schefter

Goff is unlikely to play against the Cardinals on Sunday, per Schefter. He could reportedly return to the field in two weeks if Los Angeles reaches the playoffs.

John Wolford is expected to start for the Rams on Sunday. Wolford has never thrown an NFL pass, though he did toss 59 touchdowns in four seasons at Wake Forest from 2014-17. As the Rams look to clinch a playoff berth on Sunday, they'll need a major effort from Wolford in his NFL debut.

Los Angeles enters Week 17 seeking its third playoff appearance in the last four seasons. Sean McVay's squad will reach the postseason with either a win on Sunday or a Packers win over the Bears. The Rams will face Arizona at 4:25 ET on Sunday, the same time as Green Bay's matchup with Chicago.

Goff has thrown for 3,952 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2020. He is 42–27 as the Rams' starter dating back to 2016.

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 5 Houston travels to Tulsa with perfect record in tow

The fifth-ranked Houston Cougars had rolled to a pair of easy victories following their 15-day pause of team activities caused by a COVID-19 outbreak, but an inevitable test awaited them.

That challenge came on Saturday night in Orlando in the form of a UCF squad coming off a road upset of then-No. 15 Florida State. Despite some ragged moments, Houston (7-0, 2-0 American) found a way to squeeze out a 63-54 victory that kept its perfect record intact.

"I refuse to overreact when we play poorly or really good because we just haven't had enough time to get in the gym with each other," Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson said.

"I was proud that we found a way to win the game. I think that says a lot about our culture and the way our kids are built."

Houston will face Tulsa on Tuesday at the Reynolds Center armed with its full complement of talented guards. Injuries and the coronavirus had ravaged the Houston backcourt to varying degrees, but against UCF, the Cougars turned to their most able hands for deliverance.

While guard Marcus Sasser paced the Cougars with 19 points, it was guard Caleb Mills who helped carry the Cougars home with seven of his 12 points coming down the stretch.

Mills was the lone Houston player to score a field goal over the final seven minutes, carrying the offense just long enough until Houston finished 11-for-11 from the free-throw line in the final 2:24 to cap the triumph. Guard DeJon Jarreau sank the final four free throws.

"This game is a lesson for us," Mills said, "even though we won."

Tulsa (4-3, 1-1 American) recorded its third consecutive win with a 102-45 drubbing of Southwestern Christian on Dec. 23. The Golden Hurricane dropped their first game following a pair of postponements, a 69-65 conference setback to Wichita State, but has recovered in fine form.

The home victory over the Eagles featured freshman guard Keshawn Williams and senior Manny Ugboh recording career-high scoring totals of 20 points and 13 points, respectively. That duo shot a combined 14 of 15 from the floor with Williams adding nine assists and six rebounds.

Tulsa coach Frank Haith, whose 120th win at Tulsa moved him into third place in program history past Nolan Richardson, utilized 14 players in the easy victory, with 13 scoring in the contest. It marked the final scheduled nonconference game of the season for the Hurricane and a tune up for the challenges to come over the remainder of the American Conference slate.

"I've been a part of some games like this in the past and they've gotten ragged," Haith said. "I want to applaud our guys for playing it the right way.

"There were some things we wanted to get accomplished in the game. I really wanted Keshawn Williams and Keyshawn Embery to get some minutes at the 1, so we let Eli (guard Elijah Joiner) rest up. We needed a lot of guys to get court time and I'm really encouraged with what I saw. Hopefully, we can continue to grow over the holidays."

New on Sports Illustrated: Report: Padres to Acquire Disgruntled Rays Ace Blake Snell in Trade

Snell, 28, won the American League Cy Young Award in 2018 and has a 2.83 career ERA in the postseason.

The Padres have reportedly swung a trade for their new ace.

San Diego will acquire Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Blake Snell in a multi-player deal,

according to Dennis Lin of The Athletic. The Rays will receive right-handed pitcher Luis Patiño and catcher Francisco Mejía, along with prospects Blake Hunt (catcher) and Cole Wilcox (right-handed pitcher).

Snell, 28, went 4-2 with a 3.24 ERA in 11 starts in 2020, striking out 63 batters in 50 innings. He went 2-2 with a 3.03 ERA in six playoff starts last season, and has a 2.83 career postseason ERA over 35 innings.

Snell broke out in 2018 at age 25, going 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA en route to winning the American League Cy Young Award. He has three years and $39 million remaining on his contract.

Assuming the deal is finalized, Snell's final appearance for the Rays was his brilliant outing in Game 6 of the 2020 World Series, in which he allowed just two hits and one run with nine strikeouts in 5.1 innings. He retired 16 of the first 17 batters he faced before allowing a one-out single to Austin Barnes, after which he was pulled by manager Kevin Cash despite throwing only 73 pitches.

Snell said he was "disappointed and upset" about Cash's decision after the game.

"I just want the ball," Snell said. "I felt good. I did everything I could to prove my case to stay out there, and then for us to lose, it sucks. I want to win, and I want to win the World Series, and for us to lose, it just sucks."

Patiño, 21, debuted for San Diego last season, appearing in 11 games (one start). He struggled with his command, walking 14 batters in 17.1 innings, but has a live arm and is viewed as one of the game's best pitching prospects. Patiño posted a 2.35 ERA and struck out 279 batters in 234 innings across three minor league seasons, though he had made just two starts at the Double-A level before reaching the majors last year.

Mejía, 25, was once considered among the best catching prospects in the game, but has struggled to establish himself in the majors. He was acquired by the Padres in 2018 in a deal that sent Brad Hand and Adam Cimber to Cleveland, and has hit .229/.282/.398 in 116 games for San Diego.

New on Sports Illustrated: AJ Dillon Scores First Career Touchdown, Whiffs on Lambeau Leap

Packers rookie AJ Dillon rose to the occasion on Sunday Night Football, though he could use some practice on his touchdown celebrations.

With the Packers thin at running back in Sunday night's matchup against the Titans, Green Bay turned to seldom-used rookie AJ Dillon to take on the bulk of the carries.

The youngster delivered, breaking free late in the third quarter on a 30-yard touchdown run for his first career trip to the end zone. When it came time for his first-ever Lambeau Leap, Dillon did not quite put it all together like he'd hoped.

We'll give him a pass on account of the wet and snowy conditions, and the fact that the rookie had gotten 14 carries to that point after never running the ball more than five times in any game of his young career. The touchdown gave him 92 rushing yards on the night, easily a career high.

Dillon was a second-round pick for Green Bay out Boston College, where he ran for 4,382 yards in three seasons and was a third-team All-American in 2019. He hasn't gotten a real opportunity to show what he can do until tonight, but he's shown that the Packers have plenty of firepower behind Pro Bowler Aaron Jones, whom Green Bay apparently wants to keep fresh for the playoffs.

As for the touchdown celebrations? Dillon has one more week to get the Leap down, as the playoffs are right around the corner.

New on Sports Illustrated: Bills-Patriots Preview

So many December games between the Patriots and Bills, with one team fighting for its postseason seeding and the other playing out the string.

For the first time in decades, Buffalo has reversed the roles.

The AFC East champion Bills visit Foxborough on Monday night having already clinched home-field advantage in the wild-card round of the NFL's expanded playoffs and still mathematically alive for the No. 1 seed and first-round bye.

The 11-time defending division-winning Patriots have nothing more than a few morsels to play for: They can still reach .500. They can bring coach Bill Belichick closer to Don Shula's career victory total. They can keep alive their record streak of 19 seasons without getting swept by a divisional opponent.

But when it comes to the playoffs, they'll be sitting home for the first time since 2008.

''It's the defending AFC East champs that have held that position for multiple, multiple, multiple years,'' Buffalo coach Sean McDermott said this week after the Bills clinched their first home playoff game since 1996. ''It's one of the greatest - if not the greatest - coach ever to coach our game. They're going to be prepared, they're going to be well-coached, and they'll be ready to go.''

With the Patriots' dominance in the past two decades, it's easy to forget that Buffalo was the last AFC dynasty, with four straight Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s and 10 postseason appearances in 12 years.

But it's largely been a playoff desert since then, with just a pair of wild-card appearances since then - both losses. And the biggest reason is their path has been blocked by the Patriots, who under Belichick and Tom Brady won 17 of the last 19 division crowns since 2001.

So when the Bills clinched the AFC East for the first time since 1995 on Saturday, thousands of fans were waiting at the airport to greet them when they arrived back in Buffalo after 1:30 a.m.

''They're talking about it, and I was like, `Man, there's probably not even that many people there. They just talking,''' said receiver Stefon Diggs, who is in his first year with the Bills. ''And then when I get off the plane there, God damn, that's a lot of people.

''You're thankful to have fans like that, loyal fans,'' he said. ''Knowing that they can't be in the stadium, but they're pulling for us. So it's a good feeling.''

The Bills Mafia - as they are known - won a contest for the best NFL fanbase this fall. The prize: A billboard proclaiming their supremacy, placed in an opposing town.

The Buffalo fans picked a spot on Route 1 just four miles south of Gillette Stadium. It will stay up until Jan. 4.

Here are some more things to look for in Monday night's game:

QB SHUFFLE?

Belichick gave a vote of confidence to Cam Newton after a Dec. 10 loss to the Rams in which the quarterback completed nine passes for 119 yards and an interception. Jarrett Stidham, a 2019 fourth-round pick, came on to mop up but didn't drive New England to any scores.

Asked again this week if he would stick with Newton, who was the 2015 NFL MVP but this year has five touchdown passes and 10 interceptions, Belichick declined to answer.

''Yeah, we'll see,'' he said.

THINKING SWEEP

The Bills won 24-21 on Nov. 1 in Buffalo, giving them a chance to sweep the Patriots this season. The Patriots haven't been swept by a division opponent in 19 seasons, an NFL record that far surpassed the previous mark of 11 by the 1971-81 Cowboys and the '70-80 Rams.

''To go against a division opponent and be able to beat them both times, that's a big deal,'' Bills cornerback Tre'Davious White said. ''I guess this year's the year of breaking streaks or whatever. So I hope that's the case.''

New England was swept by the Jets and Dolphins in 2000. The Bills last swept the Patriots in 1999.

READY FOR PRIME TIME?

The Bills are suddenly on a prime-time roll in having won their past three national TV games, including their win at Denver on Saturday.

Buffalo improved to 7-21 since 2001 in games played on Thursday, Saturday, Sunday night, Monday and even Tuesday, after the Bills lost at Tennessee in October in a game rescheduled due to COVID-19.

The Bills' prime-time record against the Patriots mirrors that of Buffalo going 6-35 against New England since Belichick took over in 2000. Buffalo is 0-6 in night games against the Belichick-coached Patriots, and 0-8 overall.

New on Sports Illustrated: Karl-Anthony Towns Out at Least One Week After Wrist Injury

Towns won't require surgery and will be re-evaluated on a weekly basis, per ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski.

Timberwolves center Karl-Anthony Towns will be out at least a week after dislocating his left wrist,

Minnesota announced on Sunday.

Towns will not require surgery. He will be "evaluated weekly as he undergoes treatment to return to play," per the team.

The former No. 1 pick injured his wrist in Saturday's win over the Jazz. He will not play on Sunday night as the Timberwolves look to improve to 3–0 on the season during a matchup against the Lakers.

Towns fractured the same wrist last February, ending his season. He's averaging 22.6 points, 11.5 rebounds and five assists per game in 2020-21. The Kentucky product is a two-time All-Star and former Rookie of the Year who averaged 26.5 points per game last season on 41.2 percent shooting from three. Of the 86 players to hit at least 300 triples over the last three seasons, Towns ranks No. 12 in three-point percentage.

Minnesota enters 2020-21 seeking its first playoff appearance since 2018. The Timberwolves have not won a playoff series since 2004.

New on Sports Illustrated: Aston Villa-Chelsea Preview

Frank Lampard has told his Chelsea players to take their share of the blame for the club's poor run of form as they prepare to face Aston Villa.

The Blues topped the Premier League on December 5 but have since lost three of their last four matches - each coming away from home - to slide down the division.

The most recent loss came at out-of-sorts London rivals Arsenal on Saturday and Lampard is now after a swift response when high-flying Villa visit Stamford Bridge.

"I'll take responsibility on the outside but the players also have to take responsibility," he said. "The message was clear - Arsenal are a dangerous team.

"When you go out and play 60 or 70 per cent then you're not going to win any Premier League games.

"It is not tactics or systems, it is do you want to run, back your team-mate out and sprint? Or do you want to jog and say 'maybe I don't have to run'."

While Chelsea are fading away as 2020 draws to a close, Villa are on the up thanks to three wins and a draw in their last four matches, keeping a clean sheet in each of those.

Villa have not kept a clean sheet in any of their last 19 away league games against Chelsea since 1998, however, and boss Dean Smith is anticipating a tough test on Monday.

"Chelsea have got some very good players with their acquisitions in the summer. We need to be at our best," he said.

"We know what we're coming up against, a top-four team in the Premier League. We've got to be ready and ready to compete.

"We'll see less with the ball but we've got to make sure when we win it back we use it very well."

Villa have lost 10 of their last 11 Premier League games against Chelsea, including the last six in a row.

KEY PLAYERS

Chelsea - Callum Hudson-Odoi

Hudson-Odoi made a positive impact as a half-time substitute in the loss to Arsenal and Lampard hinted after the match the winger will start this match against Villa.

The England international has been directly involved in two goals in six league appearances this term and will be looking to add to that tally in this big game.

Villa - Anwar El-Ghazi

El-Ghazi rounded off the scoring for Villa in their 3-0 win over Crystal Palace on Boxing Day to make it four goals in his last four Premier League matches.

That equals the left-sided attacker's tally from his previous 37 appearances in the competition, making him a real threat to Chelsea's shaky back four.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Villa have won two of their three Premier League games in London this season, though their only defeat on the road this term came in the capital (2-1 v West Ham). Only in 1992-93 (three), 1995-96 (three) and 2008-09 (three) have the Villans won more Premier League games in London in a single campaign.

- Chelsea have lost their final league game in just one of the last 17 calendar years (W12 D4), though that was their last home league loss against Aston Villa (3-1 in 2011).

- The Villans have won their final league game in just one of their last eight calendar years (D4 L3), winning 1-0 at Middlesbrough in 2017. Their last such Premier League victory was in 2011, in a 3-1 victory against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

- Chelsea have lost just one of their last 13 Premier League home games (W10 D2), going down 2-0 against Liverpool earlier this season. When scoring at least once, the Blues have lost just one of their last 39 Premier League games at Stamford Bridge (2-1 vs Liverpool in September 2019).

- Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has scored in each of his last six Premier League appearances against Aston Villa, netting eight goals in total in this run. Against no side has the Frenchman scored more Premier League goals than he has vs the Villans (eight).

New on Sports Illustrated: Leicester City-Crystal Palace Preview

Roy Hodgson is glad Crystal Palace will get a chance to quickly hit back from their latest disappointment when they host high-flying Leicester City on Monday.

The Eagles lost 3-0 to Aston Villa on Boxing Day, a week on from a record 7-0 home defeat against Liverpool, as their winless run stretched to four games.

The fixtures come thick and fast over the festive period, meaning Palace are back in action 48 hours after their last match, and Hodgson is targeting an instant response.

"I don't think it would have been a good thing for us to dwell on the Villa defeat any longer than we had to," he said.

"I do think we have to analyse it, though. We have to look ourselves in the mirror and ask 'what have we done wrong? What could we have done to prevent this?'

"We are going to have to make certain that we find out a way around that and try to prevent it happening again in two days' time."

Leicester defeated Tottenham and drew 2-2 with Manchester United either side of Christmas to keep their title hopes alive.

The Foxes have been fantastic on their travels this season, winning six of their seven away league matches - just one fewer than they won on the road in the whole of 2019-20.

That includes victories at Arsenal and Spurs, though not since 1966 have Leicester won three successive matches in London.

Head coach Brendan Rodgers is eager for his side to maintain their momentum and prove they deserve to be dining at the top table.

"That's always going to be the challenge. We want to be competitive," he said. "The definition of the top six is based around the financial side, and of course we're not in that.

"But if we can be competitive in a football aspect, that's important. Against Man United, a top team that have shown how good they are away from home, we were competitive.

"There's still an awful lot of improvement for us to make, but that's the bit we enjoy, that development."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Crystal Palace - Vicente Guaita

Hodgson's side have kept just one clean sheet in their last 23 Premier League games, a run that includes a goal conceded in each of their last 14 outings.

Goalkeeper Guaita has shipped 10 goals in two games and, against a Leicester side averaging 1.87 goals per game - the fifth-best return in the division - he needs to stop the rot if Palace are to have any hope.

Leicester City - Harvey Barnes

Barnes was on target in the draw with Man Utd, taking the attacking midfielder's tally for the season in all competitions to seven goals in 20 matches.

That is as many as he netted in 42 appearances last time out, with the 23-year-old fast becoming one of the key men in this Leicester side.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- After winning four consecutive league games against Leicester between 2017-2019 by an aggregate score of 13-1, Palace have lost their last two against the Foxes without scoring (five conceded).

- Leicester won this exact fixture 2-0 last season - they last won consecutive away league games against Crystal Palace in April 1998.

- Palace have not won their final league game in any of the last eight calendar years (D6 L2), last doing so against Millwall in the Championship in 2011 (1-0).

- Leicester have lost their final league game in two of the last three calendar years, meanwhile, which is more than they had in the previous 10 years (W6 D3 L1).

- Leicester striker Jamie Vardy has scored 19 goals in his last 19 Premier League away games. Vardy has also scored nine goals in his last 12 Premier League appearances in London, netting the Foxes' winners against Tottenham and Arsenal this season.

New on Sports Illustrated: Manchester City-Everton Preview

Pep Guardiola confirmed Sergio Aguero will be straight back into Manchester City's team once he is fully fit.

It has been a stop-start season so far for Aguero, with the 32-year-old having been restricted to just four Premier League appearances due to a series of niggling injuries.

With Gabriel Jesus contracting coronavirus, Ferran Torres deputised in a central striking role for City on Boxing Day, with the former Valencia man scoring in a 2-0 win over Newcastle United.

Torres made way for Aguero with 13 minutes remaining, and the Argentine had four touches and registered one attempt on target during is time on the pitch.

"We need him. I need him. The fact that in the 15 minutes Sergio played we saw him look sharp and dynamic and this is incredible news," Guardiola, whose side face in-form Everton on Monday, told reporters.

"We have to be careful, we cannot do like in the past where he came back and then is injured.

"I love this guy and he's an incredible person. As soon as he is fit, and making the step to get back, he's going into the team immediately."

Everton, who are without James Rodriguez, Allan, Lucas Digne and Richarlison, moved into second with a 1-0 win over Sheffield United on Boxing Day - their fourth straight league victory.

Though Everton sit just three points behind leaders Liverpool, Carlo Ancelotti said the Toffees, who like City have less than 48 hours to recover, are taking it game by game.

"We are there, we are pleased to be there," he told BT Sport. "We don't have a lot of time to think about it, because we have an important game in two days.

"This is unbelievable, I don't know how we are meant to play this game, but we have to."

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Everton - Ben Godfrey

Signed from Norwich City at the end of the transfer window, Godfrey has been thrown in at the deep end by Ancelotti, playing at right-back and, in the last five games, at left-back. However, he has performed brilliantly, and should he play on Monday, will get the chance to put himself up against some of the league's best attackers.

Manchester City - Sergio Aguero

Having returned against Newcastle, it remains to be seen whether Aguero will be fit to start at Goodison Park. However, with Everton in such good form defensively - conceding only one goal in their last four league matches - the experienced forward may well be required to break a deadlock.

KEY OPTA FACTS

- Everton have won just one of their last 14 Premier League games against Manchester City (D4 L9), winning 4-0 in January 2017 at Goodison Park.

- City have lost their final league game in just one of the last 19 calendar years (W9 D9), with that defeat coming on Merseyside at the hands of Liverpool in 2016 (0-1).

- Everton have won their last two Premier League home games, beating Chelsea 1-0 and Arsenal 2-1. They last won three consecutively at Goodison Park between March-September 2019, a run of six that began with victories against Chelsea and Arsenal (beating Manchester United in the third game).

- City have scored just four goals in their last six Premier League away games (W2 D3 L1), and never more than once in a match in that run.

- Everton's Gylfi Sigurdsson has been involved in four goals in 14 Premier League games this season (two goals, two assists), just one fewer than he had in 35 appearances last term.

- Since Guardiola took charge of Man City in 2016, Raheem Sterling has been involved in more goals in all competitions than any other player at the club, with his assist against Newcastle last time out his 150th goal involvement under the Spaniard (96 goals, 54 assists).

New on Sports Illustrated: No. 9 Wisconsin aims to stay hot in Big Ten vs. Maryland

Wisconsin enters Monday's matchup against visiting Maryland with a 10-game winning streak in Big Ten play dating to last season.

Two constants have helped fuel the No. 9 Badgers along the way.

"We've got a lot of heart," Wisconsin's D'Mitrik Trice said. "Obviously, we've got a lot of experience."

Wisconsin (8-1, 2-0 Big Ten) certainly channeled both attributes during Friday's 85-76 at No. 12 Michigan State.

Trailing by nine points in a venue in which the program hasn't won since 2004, the Badgers relied on steady leadership from Trice and a supporting cast. Trice scored a season-high 29 points and Aleem Ford added 13 points with Brad Davison and Micah Potter scoring 11 points apiece.

"When we got down nine ... we could have folded and we could have let them continue to go on their run, but we battled back, and we got a lot of guys that can make a lot of plays in big-time moments," Trice said.

Trice scored the first 13 points of the second half to spark Wisconsin, which shot 51.9 percent from the floor, including 42.1 percent from 3-point range.

"Just so proud of our guys, how they persevered, how they battled," Wisconsin coach Greg Gard said.

Maryland (5-3, 0-2) showed some grit of its own on Friday at Purdue, but the Terrapins ultimately were unable to recover from a 15-point deficit in a 73-70 loss.

Donta Scott scored 15 points for Maryland, including two on a layup that tied the game at 70 with 58 seconds to go. The Terrapins couldn't close down the stretch, and were just 10-for-21 from the free throw line.

"I think we battled throughout the whole game. We started down early and we played hard," said Eric Ayala (13 points), one of four Terrapins in double figures.

"We lost by three points. You know, we could look back at a ton of things that can make up for those three points. Free throws. Communication on defense. I think we'll learn a lot from it."

Maryland has lost three of four, but Friday's defeat was the only one during that stretch in which the Terrapins remained within single digits.

While coach Mark Turgeon admitted that the Terrapins "weren't good enough defensively to win" at Purdue, he lauded the team's cohesion and effort to make things close following a sizable early deficit.

"We battled. A lot of guys played well, did a lot of great things," Turgeon said. "Our post defense was terrific. Our perimeter wasn't good enough, whether getting beat off the dribble or giving up 3s. But our guys battled and that's all I can ask. We always felt like we were going to win and we didn't, but we always felt like we were going to win. We just couldn't get over the hump at the very end."

Wisconsin and Maryland played a nail-biter last season, with Davison draining a 3-pointer with 11 seconds to go to fuel the Badgers' 56-54 home victory.
